Motorized window shades FAQ

Until recently, motorized windows shades were expensive, bulky and limited to commercial projects or high end residences.

With the latest in Quiet Electronic Drive (QED) technology from Lutron and both hard-wired and battery powered systems from Hunter Douglas, motorization has become extremely popular and well-received.

Windows NW specializes in motorized shades and window coverings. We take all of the guesswork out of the technical side and let you focus on the operation, style, color and function you want for your home.

Q: Why motorized?

A: With more and more homes having larger windows and the use of hard to reach 'clerestory' windows, motorization gives you the opportunity to control light and heat at your discretion without long, dangling cords that are unsafe and unsightly.

Q: Do motorized shades install like regular shades?

A: Yes. The motor is usually concealed as part of the shade and it is installed like any conventional shade.

Q: Are there exposed wires?

A: No. With the Hunter Douglas battery powered PowerRise system, the shade contains the batteries needed to power the unit. Other systems require wiring that is usually run behind drywall or trim work.

Q: Are motorized shades loud?

A: Lutron has developed the revolutionary Quiet Electronic Drive (QED) system that is rated a mere 44dB at three feet. Other systems may have motor noise depending on the application. The Lutron system is virtually silent in most rooms.

Q: Can I retrofit motorized shades in my existing home?

A: Although it is typically easier to run wire before a house or commercial space has been finished, retrofit installations of motorized shades are very common. There are a lot more existing homes than homes under construction. WindowsNW works with licensed electricians to run wire as needed.

Q: Where does the power come from for a motorized shade?

A: There are three types of power supplies for motorized shades:

  1. Line volt. This is standard AC like you would find in any building.
  2. Low volt. Line volt is converted by a transformer to low voltage which then powers the shade.
  3. Battery power. As more and more powerful batteries emerge, the Hunter Douglas PowerRise system is expanding across different shade types.

Q: Once the shades are installed, how do I control them?

A: Most shades today are controlled by either a wall switch or a remote control. Remotes can operate on infrared or radio frequency. Both wall controls and remotes offer functions like open, close and preset positions.

Q: What is the typical price for a motorized shade?

A: Pricing depends on whether you want battery powered, low-volt or line volt operation. The size and style of the shade affect price as do the number of controllers you want for the system. As most homeowners aren't looking to motorize every window shade in the house, motorization accounts for a fraction of the overall budget.
